“It is the lurking-land of many ancient and evil things; Werewolves make haunts of its woods, hoarwyrms tunnel beneath its snows, Witch-Birds hold covens in its hills.”

-Tamūlae Sūl, “Of Rhusagos and Its Realms”

The Far North, called Drakhor by those in the south, is a desolate, cold region beyond Rhusagos. There the sunlight is always wan. It was the land of Zhē Drūmor during the First War.

Description

The Far North is separated from Rhusagos by the Sea of Regimen and two wide rivers: Khephnār in the west and Termos in the east, which are translated the Watchwater and the Riving River respectively.

Its northwestern shores are dominated by the curve of the Fell Mountains, beyond which lies the evil island Rankaros. The southern slopes of the mountains are densely forested.

The eastern half of the Far North is much more bare and flat. Most of it is known as Hoarland, which has the twin lakes Gharad and Ūgaden in its center. The Mountain Wall is on Hoarland’s eastern flank, running past it to the Snow Gulf, a large body of water dividing the Cape of Drakhor from the rest of the land.

A multitude of icy firths and fjords run all along the northeast coast, even cutting into the Fell Mountains in places.

Beyond even the Far North, there lies the little-understood Loon Sea, a seemingly endless field of floating ice sheets and glaciers.

History

After his Fall, Zhē Drūmor poured his magicks into the Far North, effecting a curse of bitter, wasting cold. It was here that he established his kingdom, and where all the foul creatures of his design lived and bred.

Following the end of the First War, many monsters, Kindreds of the Younger Children, and Witen made their homes in the wilds of the Far North.

Once, the Elder Children patrolled the Far North’s edges, fearing what lay beyond; but their vigil has grown lax of late, believing the peril to have ended, and the guard towers are abandoned and in disrepair. Alas, the corruptions of Zhē Drūmor are woven into the earth forever, and Drakhor slumbers but is not defeated.

Etymology

Drakhor, the Classical Paternic name for the Far North, comes primarily from the word drakh (“north, north wind”).
