The Swams are a race apart from their Siblings. Their bodies take many shapes: straight or curved, squishy, tough, knotted or knotless, mossy or mossless; and yet they all have one thing in common: they are mushroom folk. Few remember them, for they are a secluded people, preferring a nice, damp, quiet cave to the busy world of the “Dinny Swams” as they call the other Children. Indeed, they do not divide the world into “Swams” and “not Swams”; to them, all peoples are merely different types of Swam. For this reason, they are exceedingly friendly to those who stumble upon them, so long as they are plied with good food first.

Yet just as a plant can be afflicted with cankers or blight, so too can a Swam. Their thoughts turn dark and strange, their heart rots, and their thirsty spirit drains power out of life and earth until they become a new creature entirely, a dread thing that will not rest till all the trees, beasts, and lands around it fall under its sickly dominion: a Wiggum.
