Wendigos, also known as snow trolls, are predatory monsters native to the Fell Mountains.

Bestiary Entry

The wendigo is a foul, white-furred beast, roaming the cold mountains of the Far North. Though they are eyeless, their senses of hearing and smell more than suffice when hunting.

These beasts are pack-hunters, typically led by an alpha, who is usually the largest and most powerful wendigo within the pack. Following a kill, wendigo packs will take the choicest prey back to their den, often a cave of some kind, and send a scout, the weakest amongst the pack, to retrieve the remaining meat at a later time. Wendigo packs also start their hunts in near-complete silence, using innate magic to deaden all sounds surrounding them so they can better hear distant prey.

In addition, wendigos, being creatures native to lands of never-ending cold, tend to react strongly to sudden outbursts of heat. Therefore, if a hunter lacks magical capabilities or is too blood-drawn to produce heat, it is strongly recommended that alchemical preparations are made. Concoctions such as devil’s breath or, if additional resources and time for preparation are available, alchemist’s fire would be well-suited to the task. Furthermore, it would be wise to coat any weaponry in Bannegan’s oil, a corrosive that can breach tough wendigo hide.

History

In 1374 A.B., a pack of wendigos had skinglyphs carved into their hides by servants of the Grandmother and Rennick, compelling them to travel out of the Far North into Westerland. There they preyed on merchants moving along the East-West Road for some months.

Following the death of Grandmaster Hagar, a band of Allhammers making their way to Summarch encountered a campsite with shredded tents and mangled bodies. Mid-investigation they were ambushed by a wendigo scout, which they managed to slay with difficulty.

After retreating to a nearby town and acquiring devil’s breath and Bannegan’s oil (chemical weapons highly effective against wendigos), that party tracked the wendigos to their lair and wiped them out. Afterward, they discovered the skinglyphs cut into the skin of the wendigos. Knowing they could find no answers in the wilderness, they resumed their trek to Summarch, skinning and taking the pelts with them.

In the Fell Mountains

The party encountered a wendigo corpse while exploring the Fell Mountains. The burn marks on its back led the Allhammers to conclude that a Dragon was nearby, a theory that would be proven correct upon their finding of the lair of Lugal.

Known Talents and Abilities

Blood Frenzy (While at least one opponent in an encounter is suffering a critical injury, a wendigo increases the base damage of its attacks by 2)

Eyeless Sight (Wendigos do not add setback dice to checks due to darkness or concealment, and are immune to abilities or critical injuries that affect a creature’s sight)

Incite Rampage [Alpha only] (Once per turn, as a maneuver, a wendigo alpha can incite a wendigo within short range to make a melee attack against an engaged opponent)

Magical Silence (A wendigo may remove all setback dice on Stealth checks)

Terrifying 2 (Upon first sight, an individual must make a Fear check with a difficulty equal to the adversary’s ranks in Terrifying)

Known Weaknesses

A wendigo’s soak is reduced by an unknown quantity when struck by a burning substance or a weapon coated in a corrosive tincture (like Bannegan’s oil).
