LocationBeyond the Far North

TypePolar sea

“The farthest of all, which are known and spoken of, is Loon; in which there are no days or nights at all. The land there is made up not of proper land nor sea nor air, but a sort of mixture of all three of the consistency of a jellyfish in which one can neither walk nor sail, holding everything together.”

-Kārger in his Geographies

The Loon Sea, the Unlit Sea, or simply Loon, is the most northerly region known to the Elder Children. It is a perilous sea, in places looking more like a white field than water, for it is covered in a lattice of floating ice sheets and glaciers. It is said that only the edge of Tamar hovers above its horizon, shaped like a sickle, and that its days and nights are blurred together into an endless blue twilight.

A few tribes of the Hords have established small villages on the shores of Loon, where they hunt seals and whales.

Other Names

The sea’s name comes from a constellation known as the “Little Loon”, which contains Nīmlad’s celestial north pole and Siril, the North Star, wherefore it can be used to orient oneself north (toward the sea) at night.

All the Patrin know of the Loon Sea is hearsay and myth. They believe many sea monsters and evil spirits dwell within it, for which reason they sometimes call it Azru Hagrīn (“Leviathan Sea”).
