Of all the Elder Children, Men are the youngest. In them, the desire for words awoke swiftly. Therefore, they came to the other Children early on, wishing to learn speech and to know well their new home. In strength and skill, they flourished, and ever they hungered for deeper knowledge and greater mastery of the arts, so that in many matters they even outstripped their own teachers. But some Men had deeper wills than they revealed: to be as kings over their kin, and to be called Master and Lord. Ambition is the great strength of Men, but it is also their weakness. Unrest is forever on their hearts, for it is their nature to yearn for more than they have and to disregard that which they already possess.
