Khep Iepir Madikhon Lahar, known to most as Lahar, is the captain of the Tamarnīn, his ship. He bore the last of the Allhammers to Patrinor in the wake of the Return of the Kembar.

History

Early Life

Lahar’s fathers originated in the shepherd-lands of Hedlek, though when he was young they migrated nearer to the city Gizalīs.

At some point in his life (possibly early in his career as a smuggler), Lahar became desperate for unknown reasons. Seeking aid, he made a reckless deal with a secretive carver and Wite named Adargin. It is unknown what exactly he gained from his bargain, but in return he paid a steep price. Glyphs were carved into his left breast and beneath his eyes. And though the glyphs granted him exceptionally clear sight, his masters could peer through them at any time, or stop his heart if they wished.

Eventually he acquired a three-masted dromon which he named the Tamarnīn (Tamaronian).

Meeting the Last Allhammers

Shortly after the Return of the Kembar, Captain Lahar was commanded to wait in Sepos for a group of travelers seeking safe and swift passage to Patrinor. He was not informed of why these individuals were of interest, but he found them nonetheless, offering his services as a transport in exchange for payment. He hired Maelys at the port at the same time, seeking the services of an experienced carpenter for the journey.

It took approximately three weeks to complete the journey to Epēshu, whither his clients wished to go. In that time he watched them as ordered, and also to sate his own curiosity, guessing some but not the whole of their intentions and origin.

Becoming Blind

On the final day of the voyage, Lahar dropped to his knees in agony as the glyphs under his eyes began to violently smoke, crying out “They want to watch! What is there to watch?” before passing out from the intense pain. Guantanamo managed to disenchant the glyphs while he was unconscious. Shortly after, Dagon appeared on the ship and assaulted the party.1

Following their battle with Dagon, the party decided to take Lahar into his quarters. Investigating the captain’s skinglyphs, Guantanamo discovered their ability to broadcast visual information to an unknown receiver. Unfortunately, the investigation yielded even grimmer news: Guantanamo’s hasty attempt to dispel the magic earlier would soon blind Captain Lahar if action was not taken. Furthermore, the set of glyphs in his breast had been remotely activated, threatening to end his life. Guantanamo chose to dispel these runes to save Lahar, but consequently had not the time to save his eyes, permanently blinding him.2

When the captain eventually woke, he explained the deal he’d made in his past with Adargin, and that he did not know who’d been watching them through his eyes. He warned the party that their enemies are “many and nameless” before falling back asleep.

Soon after, Lahar’s ship arrived at the massive port city of Epēshu. Here the party departed the vessel that had borne them across the sea, saying their farewells to its now-blind captain. He told them before they left that he was considering spending some time at a temple, though he did not know yet which.
