Gimīlhizar finding the Void

“They see the darkness behind the stars and believe that it is all the outer world is. They hate its peril.”

-Doremil in the Rogondēndāl

In the beginning, there was That Which Is Not, which in the Wide World is called the Long Nothing, and the Void, for in it were all things that were not, that are not, and that will never come to be.

Cosmologically, it is all that exists beyond the confines of That Which Is, its antithesis. The Void is nothingness distilled; it is not even empty, as emptiness implies the existence of a space that can be filled.

The study of the applications of That Which Is Not is known as magicks or dwimmercraft. Prophecy, the calling up of spirits, ritual magic, unnatural longevity, and the corruption of life and earth are powers that can be granted by engagement with the Void, although those who do so are inevitably tainted by seeds of madness.

Gimīlhizar, who became the Mad One, was the first to encounter and the first to master the Void. In preparation for the First War, he conjured spirits out of it and released them into the Wide World, most notably the Líches and the Gands.
