The Gutter Wars were a protracted series of battles and conflicts between the Patrin Empire and the House of Regimen that occurred over a seventy-five-year period. They ended in total defeat for the House of Regimen, whose holdings shrunk immensely.

History

Background

For three hundred years, the Empire grew in wealth and power by land and sea, though war never ceased on their borders. They had conquered Bībūnor and the Lake, and the free colonies in Alensis had been brought to heel. With Elgemek II, the fifteenth Patermāgor (and fifth woman to rule), began a period of peace lasting forty years. Her reign was remembered fondly. But Nen-Hāspis, her daughter, wishing to win renown in the manner of her forefathers, began a campaign against the Sargāzat in the second year of her reign. Now all the Sargāzat west of Ishin was the territory of Regimen Māgor, King of Westerland, and he opposed the Empire to the end of his strength and days.

Conflicts in Westerland

In their beginning, Nen-Hāspis was worsted and driven out, and soon died of infection. Palagon II her son renewed the war effort, engaging with Regimen in First Battle of Stony Ford. He was, however, slain by Daemar, Regimen’s heir. He died childless. Eight years later, Palagon III, his brother, was beheaded by Daeka, daughter of Daemar. Horn, chief of the remaining Lake-Elves, marched from the Underwall to her aid, for which reason that battle is known as Horn’s Battle. Although he was victorious, his absence allowed for Goblins hiding in the Mountain Wall to invade his home and enslave his people.

Relkorīn, the twentieth Patermāgor, avenged his predecessors, utterly defeating King Piran the Bad in the Second Battle of Stony Ford. He invested Summarch and won much territory westwards. Thereafter the line of Regimen was spent, and the Gutter Wars were concluded.
