Mākh Abath (P. “Dry Deserts”) is the name used by the Patrin for the little-known lands of southeastern Patrinor. It is a bleak, desert country of relatively high altitude. No peoples live there. It is notable only in its role as a barrier, for none who have attempted its crossing have ever returned.
Etymology
Mākh Abath means “arid wasteland”. It is comprised of the elements mākh (“waste, desert”) and abat (“dry, arid”). However, mākh is pluralia tantum, meaning it is a noun that appears only in its plural form (the singular would hypothetically be māk). For this reason, abat is declined in the plural to agree in number with mākh, and the name Mākh Abath is translated as “dry deserts” instead of “dry desert”.
